Antonio Meucci (1808-1889), Italian inventor of the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell had previously been credited with the telephone's invention, since its patent in 1876. On 11 June 2002, the American congress revoked Bell's patent, and credited Antonio Meucci. Meucci installed a working telephone system between his home and workshop in 1855, after his wife became paralysed. In 1860 he demonstrated the system to raise money for a commercial product, which was featured in a New York Italian newspaper, but no money was raised. He filed an intent to patent on 28 December 1871, but lack of funds for this and a subsequent law suit against Bell both failed.
