The section of the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate, seen from the western side of the divide. The Berlin Wall was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) starting on 13 August 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The Wall was opened on 9. November 1989 allowing free movement of people from east to west.
