Fasciolosis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic liver flukes (a form of helminths or intestinal worms) that cause fasciolosis. Humans, cattle and sheep become infected by ingesting cysts (metacercariae) from contaminated aquatic plants (top). The adult form matures in the biliary tracts (right). Symptoms include fever, abdominal pain, anaemia and jaundice. The life cycle continues with the adults laying eggs that are excreted in the host's faeces. The eggs hatch in water (bottom) to release the free-swimming miracidium stage. This infects aquatic snails (left), with the remaining stages being a sporocyst, redia, and cercaria, before returning to the metacercaria stage to complete the cycle.
