Every year on the day on which hecommitted his crime, he puts on hisearthly clothes and comes up. And whenhe reaches the world, he suddenly findshimself at the place where he stole thetreasure. Just as before, too, he tries to hidein the bushes and is caught and held bythem. Every year Mummel, angry as before,comes up and drags the man out of thebushes, and draws him down to his palaceagain. Many people have heard the strangenoises in the bushes along the shore of thelake. Some of them imagine, too, thatthey have seen a strange form rising fromthe waters. They declare that on thisnight the lake is greatly disturbed. Thewind is loud, and the bushes bend theirheads down to the very water. On the night when these strangethings happen, people are careful to avoidthe place.
