Mahonia rust. Rust spots on the leaves of a Mahonia sp. plant caused by the parasitic fungus Cumminsiella mirabilissima. The rust-coloured areas are formed by the fungal spores (reproductive cells) rupturing the epidermal layers of the leaf. This reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize and can severely stunt growth. C. mirabilissima is widespread in Europe and North and Central America.
