Salmonella-like bacterium. Illustration of a rod- shaped bacterium with numerous flagellae, as seen under an electron microscope. It closely resembles Salmonella sp. , the bacteria largely responsible for food poisoning in humans (salmonellosis). One species of Salmonella causes typhoid fever. The hair-like flagellae are used for motility. When large numbers of Salmonella sp. are eaten with contaminated food, particularly meat, milk and eggs, they produce a gastro-intestinal infection which in some cases can be fatal. Symptoms of salmonellosis include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal pain. Magnification: unknown.
