Cross of Houelt, late 9th early 10th century Celtic Cross, St Illtyds Church, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, UK


The inscription on the shaft reads in latin [I]N INOMINE DI PATRIS ET /SPERETUS SANTDI ANC / [C(?) ]RUCEM HOUELT PROPER]/ABIT PRO ANIMA RES PA[T]/RES EUS which translates as In the name of God the Father and the Holy Spirit, Houelt prepared this cross for the soul of his father Res (Rhys) Houelt is probably the Hywel ap Rhys, king of Glywysing who was a subject of alfred of wessex and died in 886 AD. it is very unusual to be able to identify and date individuals mentioned on early christian monuments from the dark ages such as this
