The nameat that time was Norville. which in Frenchsignified North Aillage. It was long afterchanged to Norton, which was in EnglishNorth-toAvn. It is supposed that all the fami-lies of this name in England, Ireland and Am-erica were derived from one man. (I) George Norton, immigrant ancestor,was born in England, died in 1659. He cameto this country with Higginson in 1629. Hesettled in Salem, where he took the freemansoath. May 14. 1634. In 1640 he was con-nected with a company who olitained leavefrom the general court to settle Jeffreys.
