Whitridge, receiver of the ThirdAvenue Railroad, New York, has been considering the re-placement by some form of self-contained vehicle of the 25horse cars now operated on several of its subsidiary crosstownlines. Before taking this step it was decided to try in com-petition one gasoline-electric car and one storage-battery this idea in view, a gasoline-electric equipment was placedin service in November, 1909, and this is now followed by thestorage-battery car, which has been running since March 28, ofthis year. Both cars, although intended eventually for some ofthe present horse-car routes, are in operation on the important125th Street electric crosstown line so that they can be tried. Storage Battery Car with Vestibule Doors Closed and theSteps Up out under conditions more severe than the actual requirementswill demand. A description of the gasoline-electric car waspublished in the Nov. 6, 1909, issue of the Electric RailwayJournal and a tabulation of some of the excellent operatingresults was given on page 48 of the Jan. 1, 1910, issue. At thiswriting the gasoline-electric car has been in service for overfive months, during which period it has operated without otherinterruption than that due to a broken shaft. The principalquestion now is whether the storage-battery car will proveequally reliable. The latter car and its equipment have a muchlower first cost than the gasoline-electric type. Furthermore,if storage-battery cars are adopted, their total power require-ments would not be enough appreciably to affect the output ofthe power station. In fact, the cars could be charged at nightand the only expense involved would be for the extra
