Robert E. Peary. Portrait of the American polar explorer Robert Edwin Peary (1856-1920). It is generally accepted that Peary was the first man to reach the North Pole in April 1909. He was also the first to reach the most northerly piece of land in the world at the northern tip of Greenland in 1900. Peary was a US naval commander who became interested in Arctic exploration after a trip to Greenland in 1886. In July 1908, along with Henson and four Inuit, he began his famous expedition. His claim to be the first to reach the North Pole has always been disputed, but is still usually accepted.
