The practice inthis shop is to test all engines and adjust the valves properlybefore they are sent out. The rocker has large bearings andthe connections with the valve stem are so arranged that theycan be adjusted. One of the most essential parts of these engines is the gover-nor, which is of the type known as shaft or isochronal gov-ernors, but is made on an entirely new plan ; it is simple inconstructionand has few parts. As shown in fig. 3 it is inde-pendent of the driving pulley, and allows a change to be madein the_latter,when required, without^affecting its Fig- 3- The main frame of the governor has a guide cast on the to the eccentric, to receive the corresponding slide which iscast on the latter. This slide is extended at the top and formsan arm to receive the links connecting the bell-crank levers tothe eccentric. The latter has a slotted hole, through which theshaft passes, and permits the eccentric to be moved across theshaft in a straight line, altering the travel of the valve to cor- respond with the work required of the engine without changingthe lead. The slide on the eccentric is also extended on thelower side, and forms a guide which passes through a movableplate on the governor frame, which has an extension to receivethe guide. This forms asecondary guide for directing the travelof the eccentric across the shaft. A compression spring isplaced around this guide, and has for its lower seat the projec-tion on the movable plate through which the guide passes. Itsupper seat is fixed, and is formed by a shoulder on the gui
