Artificial heart. Artwork of a man with a permanently implanted device that has replaced his damaged or diseased heart. This is powered by both external (grey box, bottom right) and internal (smaller box at lower centre) batteries. The small box above the external battery is the control device. This artificial heart is the AbioCor, the world's first self-contained replacement heart. The first AbioCor implantion was in 2001, during clinical trials. In September 2006 it was commercially approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
