Americus Vesputius (1454-1512), Italian explorer. On 12th October 1492, Christopher Columbus was the first to reach land to the west of America in the Bahamas. In 1499, Vesputius followed Columbus's tracks to the New World, along with many other explorers, and was able to demonstrate that it was not part of Asia, but a previously-unknown fourth continent. In 1507 the German mapmaker Martin Waldseemuller printed the first map that used the name 'America' for the New World, named after Americus Vesputius.
