GENERAL VIEW OF THE OLDER OF THE TWO f AFTER SELLING ACTIVITY IS ABOUT OVER FISH MARKET, NEW YORK CITY. iRKET SHEDS N FULTON Wholesale price trends for fishery products were mixed during September, with some sharp increases in the fresh drawn, dressed, and whole finfish varieties and decreases in fresh and frozen shrimp and Maine sardines. The net result was an increase in the September 1957 over-all edible fish and shellfish (fresh, frozen, and canned) wholesale price index ( of the 1947-49 average) of percent as com- pared with the previous month and an increase of percent over the same month in 1956. From August to September prices increased ( percent) rather sharply for all the items in the drawn, dressed, or whole finfish subgroup except for yellow pike prices at New York which dropped percent. Increases of percent for Pacific Coast halibut and percent in king salmon prices were the result of a firmer market for halibut and salmon because supplies began to taper oft. Increases in whitefish and lake trout prices were due to the excellent de- mand for these varieties during the Jewish hoUdays. The market for fresh large offshore drawn haddock at Boston was firm due to a healthy inventory situation for frozen haddock fillets and the usual drop in landings in the late summer and fall months. The September 1957 index for this subgroup was percent above that for the same month in 1956, due pri- marily to higher prices for fresh salmon and all the fresh- water species. But both halibut and fresh large drawn had- dock prices this September were down percent as com- pared with September a year ago.
