Healthy liver. Laparoscopic view of a healthy liver (dark red at ccentre). The diaphragm is across the upper frame. At bottom centre is the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. Yellow areas are adipose tissue (fat). The liver plays a vital role in metabolism, storing nutrients in forms such as glycogen, and helping to clean the blood of toxins and other waste products. It also produces bile, a liquid that is used to digest fats.
