Grant established his headquarters with theArmy of the Potomac, Meade having the full di-rection of the army under Grants general Army of the Potomac moved toward theRapidan in the early morning of 4 May, and bynight all the troops had crossed. Grants force was about 119,000, and Leesabout 62,000. Lee pushed rapidly to his right andstruck Grants advance in the Wilderness 5 fighting followed till the night of the6th.
