True annuli were readily distinguished, but between them there were several confusing false annuli. I was, however, unable to relate scale growth to body growth, and values of body size back- calculated from scales for previous growth seasons do not make sense. Interception of annuli may be initiated by the intervals of life history and "the planetary yearly system" (Balon. 1971b. p. 99), but temperature or other environmental factors may strengthen the annulus interception (Seger- strale. 1932). The above data are recorded as a stimulus to interest, and in order to complete the description of the artificially dwarfed carp. The results of this 15
