This is the first time these bulbs have been offered in this country, Mr. Goudy, with H. A. Dreer, Phila- delphia, was also in town. Washington florists made possible many benefits for the children of the southwestern section of this city by their donations last week of carnations, which were sold by the teachers of the Smallwood public school. The flowers were placed on sale in a number of de- partment stores where space was given the teachers, and the entire proceeds will be used in connection with the children's playgrounds. The various associations of the city have agreed to observe Sunday, May 12, as Mothers' day. Appropriate ser- mons will be delivered in all the churches of the city and other features will mark the observance of the day. One of the customs attending this day is the wearing by every Washingto- nian of a white carnation, the chosen emblem, and present indications point to increased sales of carnations over last year. Considerable interest is being taken in the shad bake to be held by the Board of Trade May 25, at River View.
