General distribution: This species has an un- usually wide distribution. It is found from the Bering Sea, to Northern California as well as along the coasts of Siberia and Japan. Family Grapsidae HEMIGRAPSUS NUDUS Dana THE "PURPLE SHORE CRAB" Both this species and Hemigrapsus oregonensis have carapaces that are almost square. How- ever these two common species differ in size, colour and in the fact that in H. nudus the legs are without the numerous hair-like setae found in H. oregonensis. Colour: Purplish or mahogany red; red spots on chelae. Sizes (1) 271 (a male) : (2) 34 (3) 314 (4) 424. Local distribution: Common on rocky shores, several being often found clustered under a single rock. Rathbun, U. S. Nat. Mus.
