THE LOG CARRIAGE AND ITS ACCESSORIES 57 steel plates on which the base of the knee travels. These plates alsofit into the grooves, K, on each side of the knee, which is thus heldupright and in alignment. The shaft /, attached to the set-works, extends from the front tothe rear head-block on the carriage and is fitted with a pinion insidethe head-block. The heavy-duty carriages used on the Pacific Coasthave the set-shaft at the rear end of the blocks, the knees being advancedand returned by means of a steel screw shaft, one end of which is driventhrough miter gears by the set-shaft, the other end working in a nut. The knee moves on the baseof the block in the same manner as in the rack-and-pinion drive. Head-blocks on a carriage vary in number from two to five, threebeing used on a carriage of average length. The spacing is not standardfor carriages of given length, although on the ordinary three-blockcarriage, the two head-blocks on the front end are spaced from 7| to9 feet, center to center, and the rear one is from 3| to 5 feet from thecenter one. On a two-block carriage the blocks are from 8 to 12 feet, center to center. The formula on a 58-foot, five-block Pacific Coastcarriage was 12-12-10-16
