A bronze sculpture named ‘Miranda’, a mermaid, created by Arthur Fleischmann installed in Battersea Park, London, England, UK during the Festival of Britain in 1951. It was sponsored by the Lockheed Brake and Clutch Company. The water feature was an unusual representation of a mermaid because she had legs and fish tail fins for feet. When the festival was over, it was taken to the Lockheed HQ in Leamington Spa. It was stolen in 2001 and has never been found. Fleischmann was a Slovak-born, London-based sculptor, who pioneered the use of perspex in sculpture.

A sculpture named ‘Miranda’, a mermaid, created by Arthur Fleischmann installed in Battersea Park, London, England, UK during the Festival of Britain in 1951. The larger than life-size mermaid was sponsored by the Lockheed Brake and Clutch Company. The bronze statue was a water feature metres (8 feet) long and metres (4 feet) high. It was an unusual representation of a mermaid because she had legs and fish tail fins for feet. When the festival was over, it was transported to the Lockheed headquarters in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. It was given a listed status. Sadly, it was stolen in 2001 and has never been found. Arthur Fleischmann (1896–1990) was a Slovak-born, London-based sculptor, who pioneered the use of Perspex in sculpture. He spent time in Bali, and in Australia, where he was at the centre of the Merioola Group, before settling in London in 1948. This image is from an old amateur photographer’s negative. It will look soft if reproduced at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
