Products of meiosis and mitosis. Computer artwork showing two nuclei (purple). The nucleus at top is the product of meiosis (gamete formation), a type of nuclear division that results in two four daughter nuclei each with half the usual number of chromosomes (pink). Meiosis occurs only in the sex cells (gametes) of the ovaries and testes. The nucleus at bottom is the product of mitosis (nuclear division), which occurs in the somatic cells and results in two daughter nuclei with the full complement of chromosomes.
