China: Emperor Wu of Han (r. 141-87 BCE) with ethnic Xiongnu co-regent Jin Midi. Ink rubbing of stone relief from Wu Liang Shrine, Jiaxiang, Shandong province, 2nd century CE. Jin Midi (134-86 BCE) was born a prince of the nomadic Xiongnu, a confederation of Central Asian tribes. He was captured by Han dynasty forces and made a slave who tended horses in imperial stables. However, he gained the trust of Emperor Wu when he thwarted an assassination attempt against him. When Emperor Wu lay dying at his bedside, he designated Jin Midi as one of his regents to rule over crown prince Liu Fuling.
