The Freeport Upper Coal and Limestone should be foundin the hills near Prospect and Mount Chestnut, but ex-cepting over a small area north from the former place, theyare apparently absent. Half a mile north from Prospect the limestone is detectedby scattered fragments from its outcrop, and is probablyabout two feet thick. Its overlying coal bed outcropsrather faintly on the steep hillside west of the main road, but is probably too thin to be of any § 37. Oil Wells. {Franklin T.)Within the limits of this township, several wells havebeen unsuccessfully drilled for oil, but no detailed or evenfragmentary reliable records of them can now be Nesbitt Well on the Hindman Farm, and the Mc-Candless Well near the swamp were both drilled in 1877. FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP. V- 47 Nothing could be learned in regard to the latter, but thefollowing imperfect record of the former, was kindly fur-nished by Mr. Robert Allen. The Nesbitt oil well is situated on the flat of a small tributaryemptying into Muddy Creek from the south, and is about ona level with the Middle Kittanning Coal bed. The Ferrif-erous Limestone should have been reached at a depth ofbetween 70 and 90 feet, but it is reported in the well at 215feet. If any limestone was found at that depth, it musthave been one of the Mercer Limestones. It seems prob-able that the drillers of this well have mistaken the bed ofsoft white S
