. Electric railway journal . ND OTHERMAINTENANCE FEATURES OF THE & EASTERN RAILROAD Along with the radical changes in the power gener-ating and transmission system of the Cleveland, Paines-ville & Eastern Railroad, as described in the ElectricRailway Journal of July 19, 1913, has come a corre-sponding improvement in the condition of the rollingstock and many original features have been introducedinto the shop practice. The largest single job has beenthe making over of the old interurban cars, which havebeen giving excellent service for sixteen years or cars are of substantial construction, weighingabout 25 tons equipped, and as reconstructed theyoperate like new ones. The first step in the reconstruction was to strip thecars of all trim, ceiling and sash. The old-fashionedbeading was planed off everywhere, leaving smooth, chamfered surfaces in its place, and all trim was en-tirely refinished. The most conspicuous change wasin the vestibule. One of the accompanying halftones. Cleveland, Painesville & Eastern Railroad—Contrast of Newand Old Vestibule indicates the difference in style of the yearly and pres-ent periods of car construction. The older type ofvestibule appears to be a separate feature added to thebody, being narrower and lower; the newer form, withPullman roof, is an integral part of the car. Not onlyis the appearance thus improved but the windage resist-ance at high speed is reduced. Another illustration shows a Brill-27 truck re-equipped with inside-hung brakes. More than one-halfof the truck equipments have been thus remodeled andthe rest will be completed shortly. The change has beenmade to secure more even wear of brakeshoes, betterbraking effect and quicker release. Greater life ofbrakeshoes is also obtained by this arrangement. Inchanging the construction, the outside rigging was re-moved and four bent-steel plates were bolted in the sideframes and transoms as shown. The brake hangersare carried under these plates
