Gun battery at Fort York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - behind are apartment blocks and the elevated Gardiner Expressway
Gun battery along the walls of Fort York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Originally commanding a view of the main harbour, today it looks out on to the elevated Gardiner Expressway. In the background, forming a stark contrast to the historic site, are the condominium, apartment and office blocks that make up much of modern Toronto. Built in 1793, Fort York is the birthplace of urban Toronto. The Fort served as the settlement of York’s main harbour defence on Lake Ontario between the 1790s and the 1880s. In the Battle of York, fought here in 1813 British, allied First Nations and Canadian-born settlers together defended their community against US forces. Although that battle was lost, the fort was retaken by the British – and eventually the small settlement of York became the city of Toronto. It was the home of a military garrison until the 1930s. Today it is a 43-acre open, green space near the centre of the city – no longer on the shoreline due to land reclamation. It contains a Napoleonic- or Georgian-era fort containing the largest collection of original War of 1812 buildings in Canada and is a National Historic Site.
