Hedid more through his publicspeeches to defeat Benton in ISSOand again in 1856 than any otherman in this State. He was a re-markable orator, a shrewd poli-tician, and an able senator. On his election to the UnitedStates Senate, Governor Polk re-signed the governorship, and Han-cock Jackson, the lieutenant-gov-ernor, served until the specialelection was held in August, J.\.MES S.
