We made 420 visits to schools during the year and were generallyencouraged by witnessing the use of improved methods, and increasedattendance and interest. Directors and patrons frequently accom-panied us on these visits, thus pro\ing their interest in the cause ofpopular education. Putnamand Supt. J. M. Lectures were delivered by Dr. Willitts, Col. Copeland, ProfessorsHandy and Little; Henry Kellar gave an evening entertainment. The Directors Association of the county held a very interestingand profitable session at the institute Dec. 23. In far too many districts the increased appropriation has been usedto reduce taxation. The school law should be so amended as to com-pel school boards to use this increase for longer school year, betterwages and improvement of property—a reasonable amount for eachof the above objects—and the affidavit should contain a c
