In May, 1862, he was sent fromBaltimore to Fortress Monroe, and in the summer of1863, after the trouble connected with the draft riots,he was transferred to New York as Commander ofthe Department of the East, which place he held un-til the close of the war. In 1872 he was elected Gov-ernor of the State of New York. He was a man ofvery large reading and thorough culture, spoke sev-eral languages fluently, and was distinguished forproficienc}^ in classical studies, and for ability andelegance as an orator. 284 Medical Director GEORGE PECK.
