Aerial view of Zuheros in the subbetica natural park in Cordoba province, Andalusia, southern Spain. In the heart of the Sierra Subbética National Park and, located on a curious pinnacle perched at 700 meters above sea level, stands the picturesque castle of Zuheros, dating from the 9th century and of Moorish origin, although most of what remains still standing It is a Christian construction from the 13th and 14th centuries, next to the remains of the Renaissance-style palace that the Zuheros family ordered to build in the 16th century. It is not too big, but it is panoramic, with incredible views from the top. The bat cave represents another of its attractions. It was inhabited from the Middle Paleolithic to Roman times and is almost 1,000 meters high and has about two kilometers of tunnels. Its deepest galleries are home to various species of bats, which give the cave its name. The cave was declared a site of cultural interest in 1985 and in 2001 the Junta de Andalucía declared its 32 hectares as a natural monument.
