THE PLACENTA. \2J they invade the whole area of the placenta, must, of necessity, befatal to the fetus. The endometritis placentaris that is often aprominent feature of placental syphilis may prove dangerousto the mother by so matting the layers of the decidua serotinatogether as to occasion a close adherence of the placenta to theuterine wall, thus subjecting the woman to the perils of hemor-rhage, septicemia, or inversion of the uterus that are incidentalto adherent placentae. The accurate diagnosis of placental syphilis is impossibleduring pregnancy. The condition may be inferred with con-siderable certainty, however, should a history of syphilitic infec-tion be obtained from either parent. The treatment will be referred to later under the head ofFetal Syphilis.
