Shidle TO operate a plant comprising nearly a million and ahalf square feet of active working space, and tomove all the material required for this task withoutthe use of a hand truck is a notable achievement in the de-sign and operation of production equipment and this has been accomplished at the Studebakerlight six factory; practically it has been so nearly accom-plished as to render the achievement no less noteworthy. The elimination of hand trucking means not only re-duced labor costs, but also the reduction of confusion to aminimum, the lessening of delays and interruptions, and acontinuously high standard of efficiency in the handling ofmaterial. Two factors are responsible for the accomplish-ment of this end. 1. The layout of buildings and equipment, togetherwith the installation of conveyors and othermechanical labor-saving equipment in everypossible Fig. 1. Ground plan of Studebaker light six plant, showing relative positlon of various buildings, together with truck routes 2. The effective routing and handling of power-trucking equipment. The degree to which the first factor is developed will de-termine to a large extent the difficulty of handling the sec-ond. But even under the best conditions, a great deal ofcareful planning and intelligent administration is neces-sary to get the best results from a minimum of truckingequipment. The completeness of the conveyor and labor savingequipment and the efficient way in which it has been placedand utilized at this plant cannot be adequately treated in abrief article. In making all the parts for and assemblinga large number of cars each day, however, it is obvious thatthere must be a movement of material between buildingsand sections that cannot be handled in any way except bytrucking. And it is apparent that the continuous flow ofmaterial through the various dep
