Stereomicroscope photograph of the stigma and three anthers of the cultivated daffodil Narcissus pseudonarcis. The stigma (centre) is covered with pollen. When pollen grains, containing the male gametes, land on the ripe stigma of a flower, they germinate. Pollen tubes grow from the pollen grains down through the style to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down these tubes, fertilize the ovules and seeds are formed. Often anthers and stigmas ripen at different times, thus reducing the incidence of self-fertilisation.
