He attended Mt PleasantSeminary, Boyertown, Pa. In 1855 he entered theSophomore class at Franklin and Marshall College,Lancaster, and graduated in 1858. He was principalof the Boyertown public school for one year ; studiedlaw at Reading, Pa, under the late John S Richards,. Austin Coat-op-Arms DESCENDANTS OF JACOB STAUFFER 223 Esq, and was admitted to the Berks County Bar onApril 15, 1861 (the day President Lincoln issued hisproclamation calling for 75,000 troops). On June 28,1863, Mr Stauffer entered the Union Army in Com-pany C, 42nd Regiment, Pa Volunteers, and remainedin service until the regiment was mustered out. In 1867 he was nominated for State Senatorby the Republican County Convention, and althoughhe carried the city of Reading and ran ahead of histicket throughout the county, he was defeated by hisDemocratic opponent. He was three times elected amember of Reading Common Council and also servedas president one year. He rendered distinguishedservices in promoting and carrying many importantmeasures for the improvement of the city to successfulconclusion, notably the removing of the market shedsfrom Penu
