The actual number requisite for a given area, however, must be determined in every instance by the local conditions and the object in view ; a large bed in the distance need not be so closely planted as a small bed in the immediate fore- ground, and of course a smaller number will be necessary in either case if a ground-work such as Myosotis, Silene or Arabis be provided. Hyacinths planted alternately with Narcissi produce a very striking effect, and for this combination 6 inches from bulb to bulb is a suitable distance. The following Hyacinths, although offered at very low prices, have all been imported by us from Holland this year and can be strongly- recommended for their quality. They are specially adapted for groups in borders and shrubberies, where they will give a brilliant display of very handsome flowers: but for beds, where simultaneous flowering and uniformity of shade are of importance, we recommend the Superlative Hyacinths offered below.
