An 18th century view of the Physic Garden at Oxford University, Now the oldest botanic garden in Britain and one of the oldest gardens of its kind in the world . It now forms the Oxford Botanic Garden & Arboretum, UK. It was founded in 1621 as a garden in which plants were grown for medicinal purposes. Initial funding was provided by Henry Danvers, 1st earl of Danby (North Yorkshire). He chose a site at Christ Church Meadow, belonging to Magdalen College, part of which was previously a Jewish cemetery (after the expulsion of the Jews from England)
