He studied theology at the Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburg,Pa., and was licensed by the Presbytery of Sidney, sitting in thelittle brick church on North Main street, in April, 1863. Afterserving in the pastorate for 20 years in Western Pennsylvania, hehas been for the last 16 years a pastor in Illinois. He has beenseveral times a Commissioner to the General Assembly; was honor-ed with the Moderators chair by the Synod of Illinois in 1896, andwith the degree of Doctor of Divinity by his alma mater in present address is Golconda, REV. James Edward Stevenson, son of James Edgar and HannahMoore (Hover) Stevenson, was born here November 24, united with this church March 4, 1876, and joined the Presbyterian church in Ray-more, Missouri, in the springof 1877. He has been Sup-erintendent of the Sunday-school continually since1884. For 15 years he hasspent a part of each winteras a singing evangelist inthe weak churches of Kan-sas City Presbytery. In April, 1894, he waselected Chairman of thePresbyterial Committee ofPublication and Sunday-school Work in Kansas CityPresbytery, and in 1898 hewas elected to the same po-sition in the Synod of Mis-souri.
