Flectranthus ceassus.—This genus containsbut few plants of horticultural value, but aspecies has been discovered at last that mayclaim to be a useful garden plant. The seeds ofP. crassus were sent to Kew in February. Mr. J. McClounie from British Central species flowered for the first time undercultivation in November, 1903. The plants nowin flower in the Begonia-house (No. 8) were. ^ Id. 41.—pi? DEonrji: flowers rosv-pcrple. grown from cuttings rooted in March of lastyear. Their habit of growth is quite distinctfrom that of rao&t Plectranthus, which are usuallymuch branched and bushy, whereas this speciesrarely branches naturally. The stems are erect,stout, and slightly woody at the base, having aheight of 11 to 2J feet. The leaves are ovate,? with a crenate margin, 4 inches long by 2] inchesbroad ; pale green in colour, and rather pleasantlyscented. The terminal spikes of labiate, lavender-blue-coloured flowers are from G to 8 inches inlength, and IJ inch in diameter. A successionof flowers is maintained on the densely crowded cymose - whorls, which form the inflorescencefor fully two months.
