There are three grades of European sponges, i. e., the Turkeyor Levant Sponge, the Horse Sponge, and the Zimocca FIG. 31-—THE SYRIAN SILK SPONGE (Eusfiovgia officinalis var. mediterranea Schum.)The finest quality of Mediterranean sponge. The Turkey or Levant Sponge (Euspongia officinalis Schum.) is shown in the illustration. It is the finestgrade of sponge known. Its texture is very soft, fine and account of the latter quality it is often called the Syrian SilkSponge. This same species grows in Florida but is of very poorquality, probably on account of the climate and other differencesin its surroundings. The next grade of Mediterranean Sponge is the Horse Sponge{Hippospongia equina O. S.). Its quality is very fine and isparalleled on the Florida coast and in the Bahamas by the Velvet [34] A GLIDE TO THE SPONGES 249 and Sheeps-wool Sponges {Hippospongia meandfiformis D. & H. gossypina Hyatt). These are the best of Americanbath-sponges. (Figs. 27 and 29),, The third grade, the Zimoeca Sponge {Euspongia zimoccaF. E. Schulze), is not as soft as the others, and
