An open field of buckwheat plantation in Turtuk village of Leh district in Ladakh. Buckwheat is a moisture-loving, cool-climate, annual plant that is a native of Central Asia. In India, it is widely grown in the high mountains and fits well in the high Himalayas where the growing season of a crop is of the limited period because of early winter and snowfall. The Thang village was seized from Pakistan as a result of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. Pharnu and Thang are twin villages where family members are seen living on either side of the two neighboring country's villages.
