I shallnever forget the refreshment which Debrahs cold balm-tea, pouredfrom a broken-nosed teapot, gave to our parched throats, after theDoctor had forbidden us to touch cold water, during fever attacks. Among all this scented herbage we passed many a fleeting Auton (boy), beautiful as the day, with chestnut curls and rosy,pouting lips, would climb to the top shelf, flageolet in hand, andburied there in this fragrant retreat would discourse long repeti-tions of Lord dismiss us and Auld lang Syne, in order todrown the squeals of the younger children and the fat girls ofthe family, who, acting out the play of market, were makingbelieve being butchered for Christmas, and cut up into joints bythe older boys. OAHS ark and the jolly - boat, bywhich I mean the big four-poster andthe trundle-bed underneath it, havesheltered more square yards of chil-dren within their wide, straddlingsides than any other two private bedsin New England.
