5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (March 17, 2017) Seaman Alyssa Garrett, from New Port Richey, Fla., casts a line from the fantail of USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as the amphibious assault ship pulls into port in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates. Makin Island is deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
