View S of Mousa Iron Age (1st millennium BC) broch tower on Mousa Island off the E coast of South Mainland, Shetland. Mousa is the best preserved broch in Scotland, still standing to around , about 1m short of its original height. The base of the tower is 15m wide with walls thick. A stairway runs between the inner and outer wall faces up to the wallhead & partially roofed upper gallery. As Moseyjarborg the broch features twice in Norwegian sagas as a refuge which "was not an easy place to attack".
