Nanotechnology research into super hydrophobic properties Morpho genus butterfly wings


Several species of butterflies such as the Morpho genus have super hydrophobic characteristics on their wing surfaces. Such water repellent states enable the butterfly to shed water droplets quickly in rain. In doing so the droplets act as a self cleaning agent for the butterfly. The molecular structure of the wings form a hydrophobic nanocoating that repells the water molecules and forces them to form spherical pixels enabling them to run off the wings. The connection with architecture is that of self cleaning glass but developments could take it further into paint surfaces. Nanotechnology has the potential in to be used in technologies from energy, the environment, information, communication, semiconductors, chemicals, medical and forensic science, drugs and in making stronger, lighter materials. A nanometre or nm is one billionth of a metre, meter. A very small size scale.
