Acer carpinifolium Sieb. & Zucc. Hornbeam Maple Native to Japan, cultivated in some collections. Grows to 15m (50ft) in Japan but hardly ever reaches more than 10m (33ft) elsewhere. Flowers open in late April, early May in clusters 10-12cm (4-4¾in) long. Fruit have down curved wings about (3/5in) long. Leaves are unlike any other maple being more akin to a horn beam leaf, though are opposite rather than alternate as on hornbeams. They turn rich shades of brown and yellow in autumn. Z5. Acer japonicum Thunb. Downy Japanese Maple or Fullmoon Maple Native to Japan, grown in large gardens. Height to 9m (30ft). Flowers brightly coloured open in mid April. Keys are slightly downy at first, with widely spreading wings (1in) long, with red stems. Leaves are almost circular, with 7-11 lobes, more than most other maples, some specimens colour well other stay green. cv. 'Aconitifolium', Fernleaf Maple, has deeply cut leaves with toothed lobes turning dark red in autumn. Height reaches about 3m (10ft) though usually bushy. cv. 'Vitifolium' is similar to the species but is larger, to 13m (42ft) with larger leaves which turn glorious reds and orange in autumn. Z5.
