Munich's main square since 1158, the Marienplatz is dominated by the "new" town hall (1874-78) and its marvelous animated tower clock, the Rathaus-Glockenspiel. Recalling Medieval days when this square in the heart of Munich hosted jousting tournaments, the glockspiel's characters perform jousts and victory dances twice daily, with an extra performance in summer.
