Notre Dame de la Treille Cathedral Vieux Lille

started life as the church of St Pierre - The cathedral is built on ancient foundations, supposedly the remains of the keep in the first castle of the counts of flanders. In 1854 the first stone of the future cathedral was laid. The chapel in the apse was completed in 1867, the choir and transept shortly aftewards. In 1913, Lille finally became the seat of a bishop but work on its cathedral proceeded slowly until 1947. The early plans for a neo-gothic whore were not carried out. The fine façade dates only to 1999. This ambitious project for completing the façade was entrusted to the architect Jean Louis Carlier, the artist Lasdislas Kijno was commissioned to make the rose window and the sculptor Georges Jeanclos made the remarkable entrance.
