This election, being the fiist held after the defection ofPresident Johnson from the Eepublican party, was regarded withmuch interest by the entire country. The election of GeneralBeatty in a doubtful district, over his Democratic competitor, wasthe first triumph of Congress over President Johnson before thepeople. General Beatty took an active part in the campaign which result-ed in the elevation of General Grant to the Presidency, and washimself at the same time re-elected to the Forty-first Congress. 126.
