An anxious mother holds her newborn, moments after its waterbirth, the child is still to take its first breath.
A few seconds after this image was taken the child began to breathe and the situation became a lot less worrying. The childs colour changed from the blue baby look it has here in the image to a more natural healthy pink colouring. The cheesy waxy substance on the newborn is called, Vernix Caseosa Coating, it is to protect the skin of the fetus in the uterus from long exposure to the amniotic fluid. This is the second baby born to this woman in water, waterbirth. Mother and child are doing well.
