Artemia. Light micrograph of the small crustacean Artemia sp. (Subclass: Anostraca). These small shell-less crustaceans have bristled legs (seen here). Typically they swim upside down, their leg movements creating a water current from which the leg bristles filter food from the water. Artemia may be found in saline waters such as salty lakes and salt pans. Some species can tolerate the high salinities (water salt-content) by having a cuticle that is impervious to salt. Salt, however, continues to enter the shrimp in its food and is excreted through appendages on the legs. Magnification: x160 at , x100 at 35mm size.
